Margarita Bassova, performing under both her full name and 'Rita Bass', is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans sound art, electronic composition, creative writing and performance.
Her music is unbridled in restless emotion, a semantic susurrus of sometimes-too-garrulous vocal experiments layered over heavy bass and fractured breakbeats, teetering into IDM, and using granulation and randomisation to shift from harmony and dance to blitzed-out glitch. Across these styles, worked through hardware, computer synthesis and coding, the common thread is the use of her voice: undulating, ever-evolving harmonies forming the basis of club tracks, or distorted and contorted into an instrument itself, where sonic quality supersedes meaning.
In 2026, Rita's creative practice focuses on the research question of how one can elongate and distort traditional folk forms of song to understand them as vibrational technologies, and whether that understanding holds when they are reshaped through experimental synthesis and spatial manipulation.
